I recently read one of my Facebook posts from January, 2015, posted just prior to starting Still Thankful. The following was one of a number of occurrences that led to this site’s creation:
Thought for the day: Thank you, God, for another day.
I arrived at the YMCA this morning just a few minutes after a man “flatlined” in the cycling room. He had a heart attack, fell off the bike and lay on the floor with no pulse. A nurse was nearby and someone from the Y ran downstairs to get help. A man walking out of the weight room just happened to be a cardiologist and joined the nurse in giving compressions and applying the defibrillator. The man was revived and taken to the hospital.
The cardiologist didn’t actually workout at the YMCA; his wife had been there earlier and accidentally left her phone. He “just happened” to stop by at that time to retrieve the phone and headed for the exit just as the commotion brought him back. Further, the YMCA person on duty that day “just happened” to have prior experience in cardiology nursing.
Seeing the revived man wheeled out of the gym reminded me that I had not said the one prayer I have said nearly every day since Trenton’s second transplant - "Thank you, God, for another day."
The man with the heart attack returned to the YMCA a few weeks later, and two months later, I created Still Thankful.
For the way things “just happen,” I’m Still Thankful.
